For many years, we found most of our customers owned and modified Mini Cooper S R53s, but in recent times, we have had a huge increase in R56 Minis entering our customer lists.
For our first R56 blog post, we discuss the differences between it's predecessor and why are they naturally more powerful?
The Mini Cooper S R56 has a 1.6 liter, 4-cylinder turbocharged engine. The N14 version was produced from 2006 to 2009, followed by the N18 version that was produced from 2010 to 2014.
Engine Specifications
Engine type: 1.6 litre, 4-cylinder turbocharged
Engine code: N14
Power: 175–184 horsepower
Torque: 192 lb-ft
Top speed: 140–142 mph
0–62 mph: 7.1–7 seconds
What makes the Mini Cooper S R56 different to the Cooper S R53?
The R56 Mini is powered by a turbocharger as opposed a supercharger. When driving, the turbocharger forces exhaust out of the cylinders, which powers a turbine. The turbine turns a compressor, which blows air into the intake system - which makes the air going into the engine denser that in turn, increases the combustion efficiency and power.
The main difference noticed between supercharger power and turbo power is the time taken to feel the difference (lag). Superchargers can deliver their boost at lower RPMs, whereas the turbocharger works best at high engine speeds. However, turbos are generally more efficient (by using exhaust gases that would be wasted otherwise) and can produce more power.
What should Customers be aware of on the R56 engines?
The main issues seen are usually as a result of irregular oil servicing. Timing chain (knock or failure), coking and fuel pump failures are all verging on common but damage can be avoided with regular maintenance - sometimes being more frequent than the CBS (condition based service) indicator.
All reputable Mini specialist garages will offer free vehicle health checks and we would recommend these to be taken up when purchasing a new second-hand R56 so that you can be prepared for future expenses and keep your new Mini in the best condition.
